If you are looking for a getaway in one of our most charming small towns, Stillwater is a wonderful choice.

Charming Stillwater Minnesota

An interesting historical fact about Stillwater is that it was first known as the home of the Stillwater Lumber Company. It rapidly grew to be the largest community along the Saint Croix River.

We love to relax and feel pampered in this beautiful and historic town.

Plan a stay in one of Stillwater's amazing bed & breakfast inns. Many of the city's bed and breakfast inns are housed in the mansions formerly owned by area lumber barons.

Enjoy riverfront dining at some of Minnesota's best restaurants. Take a "Foodies on Foot" tour.

If you want to explore the river, you can rent a pontoon boat from Stillwater Boat Rentals.

You can also take a scenic cruise on the river on a paddlewheeler.

The St. Croix Boat & Packet Company schedules a variety of cruises including lunch, dinner and sight-seeing cruises.

Stillwater also has two historic hotels, The Water Street Inn and the Lowell Inn. These, as well, are charming lodgings that feature antique furnishings.

At one point in their history, Stillwater declared their town to be the "Capitol of Minnesota." This was reasonable at the time...1850...the community was second in population only to St. Paul and home to one of the largest industries, the lumber business.

Some of Stillwater's historic inns are antique-filled Victorians that seem like "mini-museums." One of the most popular B & Bs, Elephant Walk, is filled with mementos from the owners' travels in Southeast Asia.

The caves were used as a brewery in in the 1880's; they also once served as a potential bomb shelter. Take the Main Street steps near the cave to get to a lovely river view.

One of Stillwater's main attractions is the beautiful Stillwater Lift Bridge, built in 1931, and the St. Croix River that runs through the city.

You can also see the St. Croix River Valley from the basket of a hot air balloon at Aamont's Hot Air Balloon Rides, Stillwater Balloons and Wiederkehr Balloons.

Stillwater Minnesota Restaurants: Stillwater is an easy drive from where we live in east St. Paul so we often choose Stillwater restaurants for dinner or as part of a fun outing. We think Reve 324 is always a great choice...good food and a nice patio for outdoor dining.

I love Greek food so we sometimes choose Phil's Tara Hideaway. Their menu has many options other than the Greek dishes. Aristo's also has Greek food and we like the River Oasis Cafe for its views of the scenic Saint Croix River...one of our many beautiful Minnesota rivers.
