Made in Minnesota products include Minnesota inventions that have changed the world and wonderful Minnesota made foods, gifts, and housewares created by locals. There is interesting history behind the creation of these unique items.

Made In Minnesota

James J. Hill turned St. Paul into the Upper Midwest’s rail hub by building the northernmost transcontinental railroad route in the United States. Carl Wickman and Andrew Anderson created the cross-county bus line that became Greyhound. 

Minnesota based Northwest Airways was the first U.S. airline to offer a closed-cabin aircraft.

Water skis were invented, and first made in Minnesota,  by 18-year-old Ralph Samuelson who affixed two 8-foot-long pine boards to his feet, then grabbed hold of a rope connected to a powerboat on Lake Pepin.

Toro introduced the first walk-behind snow blower and the recreational snowmobile was invented in Roseau, MN. This is still one of the most popular made in Minnesota invention.

Medtronic is world famous for the invention of innovative medical devices. 3M has given us masking tape, scotch tape, post-it notes and so much more. All made in Minnesota.

Red Wing Pottery The Red Wing Pottery Salesroom, which has been operating on Old W. Main Street in Red Wing, Minn., since the 1950s, closed Dec. 24, 2015. The 140 year old Redwing Stoneware manufacturing company remains open. The company's products will still be available at a small retail shop attached to the factory and a handful of shops in the Twin Cities.

Polaris and Arctic Cat snowmobiles and other outdoor recreational equipment are made in the northern Minnesota town of Thief River Falls and Roseau. These businesses have been in operation for more than 50 years and have allowed so many of us to get out and enjoy Minnesota in every season.

Bethany House Lefse Griddle: Located in Shakopee, MN., Bethany created this griddle to bake lefse. It is a useful counter-top griddle that can be used in a variety of ways.

Nordic Ware Bundt Cake Pan This Minneapolis, MN company was launched in the basement of the founders after WWll. Nordic Ware now offers a variety of products; the Bundt cake pan became nationally popular after a cake created with the pan won a prominent baking contest. Created to encourage even novice bakers to create beautiful cakes and desserts to proudly serve family and guests.

Baby Elephant Ears This Minnesota business was created by Alicia Overby, the mother of four, out of concern for fretful babies. Proper head, neck and back alignment was the suggested remedy. When Alicia could not find a product to meet this requirement, she invented one! Dogwood Coffee: Located in south Minneapolis, the Dogwood Coffee Company is a small, quality-focused roaster. From their website: "We are focused on developing relationships in the sourcing process, learning about and executing the craft of roasting, exploring the science of brewing and creating fun, welcoming and not-too-serious places to share our coffees with others."

Sturdiwheat: One of several outstanding Minnesota companies located in Red Wing, MN. Sturdiwheat Food was established in 1939 and specializes in mixes made with natural ingredients. These include pancake mixes, bread mixes, (including Wild Rice Bread), hot cereals, dessert mixes and much more. They also offer a variety of gift baskets. Stop in when you are in Red Wing.

Norsland Lefse: Located in Rushford, MN Norsland Lefse is a great place to stop for lefse and other Scandinavian foods, products, and gifts. Norsland was featured in an issue of Food Network Magazine’s “On the Road” section for favorite foods across the nation. This Norwegian “bread” is made primarily from potatoes. Norsland Lefse uses all natural ingredients. Lefse is often served with butter and sugar however can be the basis for a variety of wraps and treats.

Hunters Reserve Located along Highway 55 in Plymouth, MN. Hunters Reserve offers a variety of wild game meats, fish and poultry. Wild game meats include classic sausage, jerky, and meat sticks as well as products made from elk, wild boar, venison and bison. They also offer wild game brats for grilling and wild game steaks. Freshwater walleye, smoked salmon, and whole pheasant are also available in the store.

Buffalo Gal Meats Visit Buffalo Gal Meats in Huston, MN. They offer a full line of natural, grass-fed meats that include Scottish Highlander beef, bison, wild boar, chicken, and elk. You can purchase ground meats, steaks, sausage, jerky and other meat products. They feature specials, gift certificates and free shipping.

Angie’s Popcorn: This tasty, and very popular, treat was first made in a Mankato, MN garage by parents who wanted to teach their children the value of hard work. The BOOMCHICKAPOP brand of natural popcorn rapidly became a sensation and now can be purchased in a variety of flavors.

Rock Star Seedz Originated in tiny Becker, MN and grew rapidly as a variety of flavors were added. Just a few flavors include Dill Pickle, Spicy Garlic, Tex-Mex, Teriyaki, and BBQ. Rock Star Gourmet, Inc. has donated over 7000 bags of Rock Star Seedz™ to the troops through organizations like Operation Minnesota Nice.

SPAM - Made in Minnesota by the Hormel Company based in Austin, Minnesota. This popular canned, processed pork luncheon meat was introduced in 1937 and called "the Miracle Meat." Sales skyrocketed during World War II. SPAM was great for the military, as it required no refrigeration and wasn't rationed as beef was. It soon became a staple in American meals and SPAM recipes became very creative.
