Wefest Detroit Lakes
WEfest Detroit Lakes Minnesota's annual country music extravaganza takes place in early August every year. We still lived in the Detroit Lakes area in 1983, the year of the first Wefest---"WE in '83."
It's hard to imagine that was more than 25 years ago. All of us did some serious star watching that year as the country greats pulled into our small town.
My favorite memory is seeing Alabama's tour bus drive down Washington Avenue---right past my craft store!
Other country music legends that appeared at the 1983 WEfest included: Tom T. Hall, Merle Haggard, Jerry Lee Lewis, Sons Of The Pioneers, Freddy Fender, Tammy Wynette, The Brower Brothers,Lynn Anderson and The Bellamy Brothers.
WEfest seemed like an amazing and ambitious feat for our small resort town to attempt. The Soo Pass Dude Ranch where the festival was---and still is---held was owned by high school classmates of mine. I had no idea they had such big dreams!
WE Fest is the largest outdoor country music festival and campout in the Midwest. Camping is a major part of the WE Fest experience. Campgrounds are clean and well lit. Five of the campgrounds have shower houses, which are open to all campers.
Other services provided at WEfest include:
24-hour medical and security services
Trash and recycling collected daily
Fresh water
RV water filling and pumping services available for a fee
