Temperance River State Park
Camp in Temperance River State Park and experience some of the best of the Lake Superior North Shore beauty and recreation offered by the many Minnesota State Parks along the shore.
Temperance River State Park is one of our favorite Minnesota state parks and the one we return to time after time.
We get a campsite in the lower campground, right on the shore of Lake Superior. Once we get our tent set up, we head out to go rock climbing and climb up the narrow gorge along the river.
You will discover beautiful rushing falls and quiet "hidden falls" at this upper level of the park.
Farther upstream, the water is calm, and many locals swim in the pools and play in the waterfalls.
You will see that others share our enthusiasm for this amazing Minnesota State Park if you read these Temperance State Park reviews.
Hiking is one popular activity in the park. Hiking trails follow both sides of the river and connect to the Superior Hiking Trail. Fishing at the spot where the river flows into Lake Superior is always one of our favorite pastimes at the Temperance River State Park.
There are two campground areas at Temperance: upper and lower. After experimenting with several campsites over the years, we decided that we prefer the lower campgroud. It is smaller, nearer to Lake Superior and quieter. The upper campground is nearer to the highway and the sounds of cars and trucks may hinder your sleep.
There are also advantages to choosing the upper campground. The modern restroom and shower facilities are located there; it's a bit of a walk up from the lower campground. Also, if the weather is cool...and it usually is along the lake...you may be cold at night in a tent in the lower campground.
Be sure to pack a copy of Camping the North Shore: A Guide to the 23 Best Campgrounds in Minnesota's Spectacular Lake Superior Region.

Between the two campgrounds there are 52 campsites for tents and RVs. Eighteen sites in the upper campground have electrical hookups.
You will find picnic tables, grills fire rings and drinking water available to all sites.

They say that the Temperance River got its name because it is the only river along the North Shore without a sand "bar" at its mouth!
