On the Water Vacation

by Stacy
(Eden Prairie, MN)

I have 5 members in my family including myself. I want to take a vacation on the river but I can't find any website that points out vacations to take on any river. Every vacation website or travel site discusses places to see by land vehicle.

Is there any place that someone knows that discusses boating vacation options that would entice adults and kids? My kids are 12 (boy), 9 (boy), 5 (girl). We own a pontoon and tents but don't know where to start our trip. What river to be on.

What to see on our trip. Which direction would be the best not only for things to see but also for safety of the boat. How far it is to each destination and where to stay other than on the boat.

Anyone, please help! This is MN that is known for our waters and yet nothing about a vacation on them?!

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Mississippi River Trips
by: Visit Minnesota

Hi Stacy,

You're right that the Visit Minnesota site, and other Minnesota travel sites, don't (yet anyway!) have any detailed "on the water" vacation trip planning.

I would say that, in my opinion, the Mississippi River would offer the most interest for a family water route vacation.

The best site that I can suggest for some tips is
the National Park Services site page on boating and canoeing the Mississippi.

There is also a book on Amazon.com that offers some detailed trip planning for a long stretch of the Mississippi River.

Mississippi River Guide: A guide to boating on the Mississippi River between Hastings, Minnesota and the Iowa Border

I hope that other visitors to our website will have some further tips to offer you. It sounds like such a fun adventure for your family.

All my best
Judie
