There are more than a dozen Minnesota ski resorts. Our state does not claim to rival the Colorado mountains however you will find great skiing here for a much smaller price.
The three largest ski resorts in Minnesota are all in the northeast corner of the state:
Spirit Mountain Ski Resort is located 150 miles northeast of the Twin Cities in the Lake Superior city of Duluth. Spirit Mountain is is a popular ski and snowboard area that appeals to kids and families.
Giants Ridge Ski Resort is located about 200 miles northeast of the Twin Cities in the Iron Range region of the state. This family-friendly ski resort offers 35 downhill runs as well as cross country skiing.
Buck Hill Ski Area, one of the oldest Minnesota skiing destinations, is located in the Twin Cities suburb of Burnsville near many favorite Minnesota attractions.
Afton Alps Ski Area is just a 20 minute drive from St. Paul near Afton State Park. You will find one of Minnesota's largest ski hills with 48 trails, 18 lifts, a snowboard park and a tubing hill. Call 651-436-5245.
Welch Village Ski Area. (26685 County Road 7 Boulevard, Welch). Just 35 miles southeast of the Twin Cities in the Cannon River Valley and north of the charming town of Red Wing, this family owned operation is considered pretty challenging (at least my Minnesota standards) and is also a good place for beginners. Call 651-222-7079 or 800-421-0699.
Coffee Mill Ski Area. (99 Coulee Way, Wabasha). Located 75 miles south of the Twin Cities and on the Mississippi River, this resort has spectacular views of the river valley and the longest vertical drop in the area. Call 651-565-2777.
Mount Kato. (20461 Highway 66, Mankato). The flat rural countryside surrounding Mankato (80 miles south of the Twin Cities) seems like the last place you'd find a ski area with 19 runs, but here it is. Call 507-625-3559 or 800-668-5286.
Powder Ridge Winter Recreational Area. 15015 93rd Ave, Kimball). Located about 65 miles northwest of the Twin Cities (near St. Cloud), Powder Ridge is known as a great place for freestyle terrain. Call 800-348-7734.
Minnesota snowmobiling trails are often found in the same area as our ski resorts.

Maplelag Resort — A destination cross country ski resort near Detroit Lakes: overnight accommodations, American Plan, home cooked meals served family style, 64 km of Pisten Bully groomed trails.
Detroit Mountain just outside of Detroit Lakes offers a new lodge and many amenities for skiing and other snow sports.
Gunflint Lodge, Grand Marais is in another Minnesota cross-country skiing paradise.
A ski resort is one of the best winter destinations if you love to get outdoors in the snow. There are lots of other winter vacation ideas throughout the Visit Minnesota website. Our winter wonderland may just change your view of what time of year you want to experience a Minnesota vacation.
