Minnesota Fishing Opener
Get ready for the Minnesota fishing opener by brushing up on Minnesota fishing regulations.
A favorite memory of childhood is being allowed to stay up all night for the fishing opener. We lived in Cass Lake at the time where area lakes, then as now, provided some of the best fishing in all of Minnesota. Now as then every angler has their favorite Minnesota fishing lakes and that is where they want to be for the opener.
We always spent the evening before opening day gathering our equipment, sorting our tackle boxes and digging worms. We wanted to be prepared for whatever was biting!
As the evening wore on we packed some sandwiches in paper bags and put coffee in a thermos...for Dad. By 11:00pm we were at the lake and loading our gear into a small wooden boat. We didn't own a motor so we all took turns on the oars. We rowed out on the big lake to our favorite fishing spot and exactly at midnight of the Minnesota fishing opener, made our first casts.
These days we are more likely to check in at one of the wonderful fishing resorts, Minnesota fishing lodges or lake cabins where we can enjoy fishing with family and friends.
You can feel the excitement thoughout Minnesota leading up to the first day of spring fishing. The Minnesota Governor’s Fishing Opener, in May, has been a tradition since 1948. The opener promotes Minnesota’s recreational and tourism industry and always feels like an acknowledgement that the summer season is upon us.
The fishing opener is hosted by different communities every year. The media spotlight on that community, as the Governor and his entourage shows up to participate, highlighst local fishing recreational activities and attractions.
