Detroit Lakes Minnesota

Loon on Detroit Lake at Detroit Lakes Minnesota

The resort town of Detroit Lakes Minnesota features a mile long beach on beautiful Detroit Lake. This resort town entices visitors to Minnesota as "the 412 lakes area." There are indeed at least 412 lakes within a 25 mile radius of the city.

I spent my high school years in Detroit Lakes and the beach on Detroit Lake was where we spent our summers sunning and water-skiing. Even then, the area was one of the primary summer playgorunds for people from "the cities," from North Dakota and from Canada. The area lakes were surrounded by simple family cabins and many who lived right in Detroit Lakes also had a cabin on one of the lakes.

Many of those small cabins are gone and have been replaced by large homes and resorts. The Detroit Lakes city beach is still a huge draw for Minnesota tourists. Boats and bikes can be rented at various places along the beachfront. A sidewalk curves around a long stretch of beach and you can also walk along the observation pier.

The 80-year-old Pavilion on Detroit Lake has been recently restored. Located on the edge of the City Park, the pavilion has hosted many famous orchestras, bands, and musicians over the years providing dancing and entertainment to the public in a beautiful setting.

Across the street from the beach In and around Detroit Lakes, Minnesota are 14 golf courses, including Wildflower, Forest Hills, Maple Hills, Iron Man, and Lakeview Executive Golf Club.

The Detroit Lakes Community and Cultural Center, a state-of-the-art facility, features a year-round theater, aquatic center, field house, racquetball courts, fitness center, indoor track, and a coffee shop within.

Other area attractions include The area the Go-Putt-N-Bump Amusement Park, two river tubing companies, and a horseback riding ranch.

Large events throughout the year include one of the region's largest 4th of July celebrations, The Northwest Water Carnival, and Wefest at the Soo Pass Ranch.

Detroit Lakes has some wonderful resources for those interested in Minnesota History. One place not to be missed is the Becker County Historical Musueum. The Anishinabe Cultural Center and Gallery
