Boundary Waters Map

Boundary Waters Map

A Boundary Waters map, or set of maps, is essential to your experience of some of Minnesota's wildest territory. The labrinth of lakes in the BWCAW offer stunning scenery, remote camp sites and opportunities for fishing, wildlife viewing and so much more. This is an area of Minnesota, however, that requires careful preparation to visit.

If you are using a Boundary Waters outfitter service, they will, of course, provide you with maps of the area you are entering. These are waterproof maps, essential in the wilderness. There are the "big picture" maps that give an overview of the "lay of the land" and other maps that show specific campsites, portages and other area details you will need for a successful trip.
A Minnesota based map company, W.A. Fisher, provides some of the best Boundary Waters maps as well as maps of other Minnesota lakes, fishing spots and canoeing routes. If you canoe, fish, camp, snowmobile or hike in the border country of Minnesota and Canada, you'll do well to use a Fisher map.

The Fisher map company has developed the most detailed and complete Boundary Waters map system as well as the best maps of the extensive Minnesota and Canadian border areas. Fisher Maps are accurate enough to be used for finding portages, hiking trails and campsites in the Superior National Forest, BWCA and Quetico Park.

The most popular Fisher maps are available for purchase online.

You can also spend some time on the official Boundary Waters web site.

And for even more information, you can always trust the Minnesota DNR web site.

The QuietJourney web site offers their "Magical Maps of the Boundary Waters." These are a complete set of digital maps covering all of the BWCA.

With these maps you can zoom in/out and scroll around all 27 of their Boundary Waters maps. These are the same maps canoeists, outfitters and guides have been using, and updating, on Boundary waters canoe trips for decades. You can:

  • Find any lake, BWCA entry point, campsite, portage and canoe routes.
  • Click to see hiking and ski trails in the Superior National Forest
  • Find links to hundreds of DNR lake depth maps and fishing surveys.
  • Find links to resorts, lodges, outfitters, guides, and more in Ely, Crane Lake, Grand Marais, the Sawbill and Gunflint trails,
On this site you can also create a multimedia album of your Boundary Waters trip by adding photos, sounds, videos, or other web files.
