Big Ole, Alexandria's mascot, symbolizes much of the history of this area of Minnesota. The Runestone Museum displays the famous rock that many believe proves a Viking discovery of America that pre-dates the history most of us have learned.

There are many other reasons to visit Alexandria, Minnesota. "Alex," as most Minnesotans call it, is located in central Minnesota's Douglas County and surrounded by 247 lakes. More than 50 resorts and many hotels and bed & breakfast inns are ready to welcome visitors to the area.

Alexandria Minnesota vacations offer all of the Minnesota recreational opportunities that you think of when you plan a Minnesota vacation. Water sports including great fishing, beautiful hiking and biking trails, seasonal festivals and great shopping all can be found in Alexandria and the surrounding area.

The most well known of Alexandria's resorts is Arrowwood. Located on Lake Darling, this large resort includes an indoor water park, golf course, stable, marina, a day spa and, for the kids, Camp Arrowwood.

Alexandria Bed & Breakfast Inns: the most highly rated bed & breakfast inn in the Alexandria area is the Cedar Rose. The Pillars B & B, a "turn of the century" home, is also a good choice.

Things to do in Alexandria Minnesota

Explore some of Alexandria's Scandinavian history by visiting the Runestone Museum and the Knute Nelson House. Be sure to have your picture taken by the statue of Big Ole! Staying with the Scandinavian theme, you can shop at the Vikingland Book Trader and the Scandinavian Gift Shop, take in a race at the Viking Speedway or a game at the Knute Nelson Memorial Stadium. Visit in June for the Vikingland Band Festival.

If you have an interest in boats, don't miss the Minnesota Lakes Maritime Museum.

Visit the Carlos Creek Winery just two miles north of Alexandria. Tours are offered on the hour. If you are in town in mid September you can join in the Grape Stomp and Fall Festival at the winery.

Fifty-five miles of paved trail, the Central Lakes Trail, runs through the area. Bikes can be rented at The Bike and Fitness Company at 805 1st. Ave. E.

Ride go-carts, play mini golf and find other fun at Casey's Amusement Park. Play golf at Aitikwa Golf Course (a public course at Arrowwood Resort), at Geneva Golf Club or at the Alexandria Golf Club. (a private club that is sometime's open to the public).

Fun Rentals rents watercraft like boats, pontoons and canoes. Take scuba lessons and go on dives with the Diver's Clubhouse. Come for winter skiing at Andes Tower Hills.
